This card is on my fridge. Isn’t it hilarious? Did you notice the competing necklaces? Ha!
I find the statement particularly apropos lately. Just last week, I heard I might be technologied right out of my day job. Our office has implemented the new digital medical records software, which include a voice recognition application for the dictation. It’s only a matter of time until the doctors do my job themselves.
Yes, it’s not great news. And it’s scary. But when I tell my friends, I follow the statement with a pause, punctuated with a louder “Thank God!” I’ve been a medical transcriptionist for over 15 years. I’d rather type something else… like my novel.
For now, I still work 32 hours/week in the day job, but Mondays are all about making that novel happen. I feel like this is it – now or never. If I don’t, I’ll just end up working in another office, punching the clock and asking what the office policy is on email/internet use.
I… just… can’t.
Okay, you know I can. If it’s either work as an office drone or live in a cardboard box behind the Kroger, smelling the fried chicken and jojos, I’ll work. I’ll work two jobs. But what if I could be a novelist? This is my chance to bet on me. Have you ever taken a chance on yourself? Are you hearing Abba in your head right now?
So, it’s Monday. Back to the keyboard! But, I wanted to wave a cheery hello while I wait with baited breath for that pink slip (pink email).
Of course, I may have to play Abba now and then and do a twirl.
